What A Splendid Outing ... Canal Gardens Golf Tournament 2008

One of the key objectives of Kota Kemuning Canal Gardens Golf Tournament is to raise funds where all the net proceeds from this tournament are channeled towards Canal Gardens Fund to subsidize all future in-house sports and social events.

This is also a very good opportunity to come together and get to know your fellow residents within Canal Gardens and finding new golf “kakis” as we are joined by our very supportive invited guests as well.

We are very pleased with the warm responses from Canal Gardens’ residents as well as their golf-buddies (about 30 – 40% are invited guests / non-residents). We have a total of 48 golfers, happily and excitedly sweating out on a sunny afternoon from 1pm to 6pm, conquering a quite challenging 18-hole course.

Dinner was held from 7pm … and our lucky draw prizes were also one of the highlight of the tournament. Almost every participant go home with at least one lucky draw prize (well almost everyone lah … so hopefully next year we can get more sponsors).

Once again we thank all the fellow residents’ golfers as well as their invited guests for the sportsmanship and support! A BIG thank you to the key organizers, especially to Steven Lim, Brandon Chin and Choong Chee Sham as well the rest of the committee members and not forgetting the CWC (Committees Wives Club) who helped out in the run up as well as during the tournament. Last but not least, to all our sponsors who have contributed handsomely, a BIG thank you!

Hats off to you, ladies and gentlemen!!!

Canal Gardens Golf Tournament 2008

Just want to make a short entry here to thank all of you who had participated and those of you who have worked hard to make our inaugural Kota Kemuning Canal Gardens Residents' Golf Tournament 2008 as successful event.

We have uploaded the photos here: http://picasaweb.google.com/canalgardens

Please stay tune. We will blog more about this tournament later. More photos will be uploaded too!

CGRC 2007/09 - 5th Meeting

The team members of Kota Kemuning Canal Gardens Residents' Committee met up for the fifth time in four months, to discuss and find ways to address the problems and/or issues brought up by the community.

Here are some of the key items which we went through during this meeting on Friday, 15th February 2008:

1. Dirty and Stinky Canal (Macam Canal, Bukan Canal)
The canal in Canal Gardens is way too dirty, clogged up, producing foul stenches, to be called a canal. Uh... It looks like a canal, sounds like a canal but we are really not sure whether this is actually a canal. We understand that this so-called canal is actually meant to be a big drain ... it is now functioning more like a longkang besar without proper floodgate, oxidation system. We need a proper floodgate, extra culverts, oxidation system to keep this canal functional and clean. So we need to fix this asap!

2. Securities (Tidak Apa Attitude and Work Ethic)
The are many complaints on the tidak-apa attitude and tak-kisah kerja problems with our current security guards. Contractors and visitors are being allowed to enter without proper verifications and there are no proper checking when they exit. We also have problems with our own residents, some who just refused to use their cards (for reasons only known to them) and expect the security guard to recognize them and main tekan the switches to allow them free entry. We would like to seek the fullest cooperation from all residents to help our security guards to their jobs. You should tegur, tick off or at least highlight if they are not doing their job properly and not when they ask you to sign in when you don't have the proper entry card.

3. Setting Up and Registering a Proper Residents Association for Kota Kemuning Canal Gardens
One of the way to resolve our current issues with regards to poor maintenance services rendeered by our developer (or developer's sister company) - from securities to cleanliness, is to setup and register a fully recognized Residents Association for Kota Kemuning Canal Gardens. We are targeting to achieve this as soon as possible, within the next couple of months. For your information, we are now currently operating under the patronage of PPKK (Persatuan Penduduk Kota Kemuning).

4. Golf Tournament Updates
Fixed for Sunday, 24 February 2008 at Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort. Prizes and goody bags have been arranged by Steven Lim and his sub-committee.

5. Family Day 2008 Updates
Fixed for Saturday, 22 March 2008. To be organized by Lily Wong and her sub-committee.
We are proposing a fees around RM30.00 (adults) and RM15.00 (children below 12 years). We are lining up some exciting and fun programmes for the young ones as well as adults:
  • Yummy, Yummy Food
  • Karaoke Singing Contest
  • Master and Miss Canal Gardens Contest (for children ranging between 5 – 10 years)
  • Clowns
  • Face Painting
  • Stalls - Selling house safety equipments like fire extinguishers, house alarm systems etc.
  • And many more fun, exciting events ......
6. Lion Dance for Chinese New Year
Lion Dance at the Central Park on Sunday, 17 February 2008

7. Speeding Dangerously in Canal Gardens
We would like all residents to observe the speed limit within Canal Gardens. Please go slow, stick to 30-40KM/Hour. If you seen anyone speeding, be it our residents and/or outsiders, please list down the Car Number/Date & Time of the incident and email to us. We will go address this directly with the resident. If these speed-maniac is outsider, for example, contractors or visitors, we may blacklist and ban them from entering Canal Gardens. We will also be getting quotations for mirror to be placed/located at the blind corners of Roads F and P.

Here's our Action Plan:
  • Letter to HGD Property Services Sdn Bhd requesting for a meeting – done and awaiting their response. They have refused to meet us for the past seven months. We paid our monthly maintenance services ... but they refused to even participate in meetings ... how can?
  • Representation to Mayor and Wakil Rakyat on the problems faced by Canal Gardens residents ... especially the big canal issue!
  • Follow-Up with MBSA on the street light which has not been functioning for the past 6 months at the Central Park.
  • To get quotation for mirror to be located at the blind corners of Roads F and P.
You can learn more about the past, existing as well as latest happenings, events, as well as issues faced by Canal Gardens community here, through our past meeting updates:
  1. 1st Meeting - 2nd November 2007
  2. 2nd Meeting - 14th November 2007
  3. 3rd Meeting - 14th December 2007
  4. 4th Meeting - 11th January 2008

The Right To Clean Smoke-Free Air (by SAW,Shah Alam, Selangor)
Without fail, from two to three times a year, residents along Kesas Highway between Shah Alam and Klang face smoke from fires in nearby estates and farms. The authority concerned seems to be closing an eye, and both their ears and noses as well. Don't we have the right as citizens and taxpayers for clean, fresh and smoke-free air when we sleep?

Why must we wait for the haze to affect Putrajaya before the authorities send a few ministries to Indonesia for a chat? It's our farmers/landowners who are responsible for this yearly “season”.

Do Something About Open Burning (by CPT, Shah Alam, Selangor)
This is my third letter about the open burning and critical smoke condition in Kota Kemuning and its surrounding areas. Since last week until now, the condition has been very bad. Open burning happens every day, and it seriously affects the quality of air. It’s so bad that I even have sore throat and breathing difficulties. Those who frequent the Kesas Highway will understand what I mean.

A Department of Environment (DOE) staff told me that the burning started seven years ago.
I made numerous calls to the DOE whenever the situation turned unbearable and the answers given were the same: ‘tanah gambut’, hard to track the owners.

To me, those are excuses more than solutions. What amazes me is when the smoke is coming from Indonesia, we quickly send our firemen there. And some ministers will try to impress the people by giving suggestions on how to solve the problem. But when it happens right on our very own shores, nothing seems to be done. When you call the DOE, they give you nothing but excuses.

I truly believe that if the authorities put their hearts into this problem, a permanent solution can be found. I hope the new Cabinet will step in and solve this seven-year old problem.

Smoky and Hazy Days

The smoky and hazy days are here again. We hope they won't stay for long. Today was relatively better compared to the last couple of days. According to reports by The Star on 20th February 2008 and 22nd February 2008, these smoky and hazy udara were the result of open burning by some illegal farmers who were clearing private land and the estate in two areas near Kampung Johan Setia, which is quite near / next to Kota Kemuning. We must "thank" them for their extremely "fresh" @#$% udara!!!

“We have issued two fines of RM2,000 each to the plantation for open burning and also directed the owners to stop the spread of the fires,” said Che Asmah (Selangor Department Of Environment Director). Well, what will RM2,000 do to these folks ... No wonder they stick to this tactic of open burning. After all, we are very sure it will take more than RM2,000 to clear the plantation if they were to employ pekerja and machineries.

Here are the two featured articles from The Star:

Smoke Smothers Klang Villages by Dharmender Singh (20th Feb 2008)
Open burning in two areas near Kampung Johan Setia here has set off peat fires and caused several areas around Klang to be covered in a cloud of smoke. Kampung Johan Setia resident Mohamad Rahmat, 63, said the village had been engulfed in smoke since late Monday, leaving many villagers suffering from breathing problems.

“My grandson and I both suffer from asthma and we have been having difficulty breathing since last night,” said the roadside corn seller. He said open fires causing the peat to smoulder was an annual occurrence as farmers cleared land to plant pineapples and vegetables in the area.

Selangor Department Of Environment director Che Asmah Ibrahim said the department had been working with the Fire and Rescue Department to bring the fires under control. She said the department could not trace the farmers who had started the fires in Kampung Johan Setia as many of them had cleared private property illegally.

Illegal open burning also set off more fires at the 40ha Meraya Pine plantation near the village.

“We have issued two fines of RM2,000 each to the plantation for open burning and also directed the owners to stop the spread of the fires,” Che Asmah said.

Selangor Multimedia, Environment and New Villages Committee chairman Datuk Ch’ng Toh Eng said local farmers and Rela members have been roped in to contain the fires. A spokesman for the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department in Shah Alam said firemen were working round the clock to put out the peat fires, spread across 161ha.

“The actual affected area is less than 3.2ha in Ladang IOI, a palm oil plantation in Kampung Johan Setia, Seri Andalas,” he said.

Smoky Days Are Here Again by Dharmender Singh (22nd Feb 2008)
Firemen working to put out the peat fires near Kampung Johan Setia are facing fresh problems in limited water sources and new fires appearing at a plot next to the Meraya Pines plantation.
Sri Andalas station chief Karim Ayob said his men spent most of Wednesday night battling the fires and had managed to reduce the area that was still smouldering but new fires were appearing about 20m from the original site.

He said about 22 firemen and 12 Rela members plus a number of plantation employees had been working to put out the fires but the task was not easy as it was difficult to reach the bottom of the over one metre deep peat. Firemen are now using three fire engines and six pumps from the department and another three pumps from the owner of the plantation.

“This is a plantation so there are no hydrants here and the two earth drains we have been pumping water from are running low on water due to the dry season,” he told StarMetro when met at the plantation recently.

The Fire and Rescue Services Department has been working for the past several days to put out the peat fires that have left several areas around Klang covered in a cloud of smoke over the last three days. The thick smoke from the fires could be seen covering areas several kilometers away from the source like Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang town, Shah Alam and even the Shah Alam Expressway (SAE). The peat fires were the result of open burning by illegal farmers who were clearing private land and the estate in two areas near Kampung Johan Setia.

Villagers and nearby residents claimed that the fires were an annual inconvenience that often left residents, especially those suffering from breathing problems, feeling ill for weeks afterwards.

Selangor Department Of Environment director Che Asmah Ibrahim said employees from the 40ha Meraya Pines plantation also joined the fire fighting efforts but they were still not able to put out the fires.

She said the thick structure of the peat made it difficult to put out the smouldering fires, which produced thick smoke but the fire had been brought under control.

“We have been able to bring it under control but it will take time to put them out completely.
“We are using all the resources we have,' she said.

On complaints that the smoke got thicker at night, Che Asmah said, affected residents around the area need not fear that people were starting fresh fires at night.

The thicker smoke at night, she said,, was due to atmospheric changes at night that reduced the dispersal of the smoke.

“During the day the heat causes turbulences in the air which helps to disperse the smoke, making it less dense but the cold air at night causes the smoke to hang in the air, thus it appears smokier,” she said.

Safe Driving Tips for the Long Drive

It's Balik-Kampung time again as many of us will be heading back to hometowns, down South, up North or off to the East.

Regardless of whether you are new to driving long distances or a ‘veteran’, here is a good article on safe driving tips from Motor Trader to help you or remind you so that you and your loved ones reach your destination safely to enjoy the holidays.

Pets for Adoption

Received an email from Jess Lim who currently working part time at the local animal clinic. There are 2 lovely kittens and 3 adorable cats which are up for adoption. They were saved by the doctors and are looking for good homes and loving families to take them in. There are 2 males and 3 females which are fully vaccinated and neutered, very friendly and are used to being around humans. This is a call to animal lovers out there who are looking for a pet or have friends and families who are interested, please come to Caring Animal Clinic which is located near the Bread Basket.

Please Do Not Litter

We received complaints that some of our residents dumped rubbish alongside those "black bags" which typically contain garden refuse for collection by MBSA or Garbage Collector. We have seen some used mattresses, boxes etc.

We would like to seek your cooperation to keep Canal Gardens clean. Please do not litter!

Another Armed Robbery (Jalan Anggerik Liparis)

Received this unconfirmed information from Hon (one of our CGRC members).

There was another robbery on 28th Jan 2008 (Monday) around 8.00am on Jln Anggerik Liparis 31/148 (near the school and MCM area). 3 armed men with parang came out from a black BMW and robbed the man while was about to send his son to school. He was robbed off his car and also money. They broke the side window and forced him out of the car.

I believe the majority of us, the Canal Gardens community, truly appreciate the fact that we are staying in a "Gated-Area" which is much safer compared to "Open-Area". Please continue to give your upmost cooperation and attention to our security guards. Please help to ensure that these security guards do their jobs e.g. taking down the details of non-residents coming into Canal Gardens, checking vechicles leaving Canal Gardens, and making their timely patrol and rounds etc. You have the right to question or highlight any issues with regards to our security guard performance.

If there's any incident which you are not satisfied with regards to their performance i.e. not doing their job as required, please share it with us. Email us at CanalGardens@gmail.com.

Let's play our part and continue to make Canal Gardens a safe haven for all of us.
